What is Freeform?

Freeform is the new name for ABC Family. The Freeform app provides you with two ways to enjoy your favorite Freeform shows like Pretty Little Liars & The Fosters: watch full episodes anytime, anywhere in the United States, or Freeform live on your Apple TV! Sign in with your TV provider* to watch the latest episodes! Don’t see your provider listed? No worries—there are still episodes you can watch!

*You must sign in with a participating TV provider to view pre-selected Freeform programs or to view the Freeform live stream, in the U.S. on your Apple TV

Why did you change your name?

We wanted a name that felt more like us. We’re changing our name to be a better fit for our shows and social platforms, which are more targeted to young adults than families.

What's happened to the WATCH ABC Family app?

The WATCH ABC Family app changed its name to "Freeform." That's it, just "Freeform." You’ll still be able to watch your favorite shows, directly from the Freeform app, and we’ll be adding some more cool features too.

What does lock symbol and SIGN IN TO WATCH mean?

The lock symbol and SIGN IN TO WATCH identifies which content requires you to sign in with a participating TV provider.

Why am I asked to sign in with my TV provider?

For some of our videos, you will need to sign in through your TV provider. All you have to do is select your TV provider from the list, sign in with your username and password, and start watching!

If your TV provider is not listed, you can contact them and ask them to carry Freeform. If you have additional questions, please contact us via our online feedback form.

Is there an extra cost to access the features of Freeform?

Freeform is brought to you by your TV providers at no additional cost.

When I'm watching live in the app, why doesn't the programming match what's on my TV?

Sometimes we have to run different shows & movies in the app than what you see on your TV. Program substitutions may apply.

Does Freeform use my personal or TV provider account information?

Is Freeform available outside the U.S.?

Freeform is only available if you're physically located within the U.S., or its territories (including Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands).

I am serving on a U.S. military base located outside of the U.S. Can I still access your service?

Yes, if you're physically located on a U.S. military base that happens to be outside the U.S. and you are using a military-operated Internet connection (not a commercial Internet provider), then you will be able to access our service.

Freeform

Does this mean you will not air family programming anymore?

Freeform will still air your favorite series & movies.

Does this name change mean my favorite shows are being canceled?

Freeform will still have all your favorite shows, plus we have lots of great new series coming your way!

Will you still air movies?

Absolutely. Freeform will continue to air your favorite movies.

Verify TV Provider

What if my TV provider is not listed?

We are continually adding new cable, satellite, and other TV providers. Go to Freeform.com/activate and enter the activation code from your device to view if your TV provider is participating in our service. If you don't have an account with a participating TV provider, you can still watch some episodes on Freeform without signing in.

How do I activate my device and verify my TV provider?

Select any content with a lock symbol or go to Settings > Verify your TV Provider to prompt the activation instructions.

You will receive step by step instructions to verify your account by using any computer or mobile device. The console will provide you with a unique activation code that you will need in the verification process.

Follow the steps below to verify your account:

  1. Visit the link provided in the activation instructions.

  2. Enter the code from your console screen into your computer or mobile device.

  3. Select your TV provider.

  4. Login with your TV provider.

  5. If your sign in is successful, your full episode playback or live stream will play automatically.

If the activation code doesn’t work, the code has expired. To receive a new code, select "Get New Code".

Once you have the new code, follow the steps above to activate.

I forgot my username and password. What should I do?

No worries. Just choose your TV provider from the list, and you’ll be taken to their website. Look for a button like “forgot password” and just follow the steps from there.

What if my TV provider and Internet provider aren't the same? Which one do I use?

Good question! You should use the username and password for your TV provider.

Do I have to sign in every time I use the app?

The short answer is no, but check your TV provider’s website to get the scoop as the length of time may vary.

How do I sign out?

To sign out, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to "Settings" in the Freeform app

  2. Select "Sign Out"

  3. Select Continue

Please note that if you sign out, you will have to repeat the activation process the next time you access the live stream and some on demand content.

Video Playback

Video playback stalls or is choppy.

Playback should not stop or stall under normal circumstances; however, video delivery may be disrupted during periods of network congestion, poor Internet connections, or when too many Internet connected devices are connected at the same time.

Please try one or all of the following:

  1. Press the back button on the remote to activate the rewind scrubber back in time several minutes in the on demand program timeline

  2. Close the selected app and open it again

  3. Disconnect other Internet (e.g. Wi-Fi) connected devices that may be connected at the same time

  4. Plug your Apple TV into a wire connection instead of using Wi-Fi

  5. Restart your Apple TV device as a last resort

Why am I getting an "Out of the country" error message?

Freeform is only available if you're physically located within the U.S., or its territories (including Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and Bermuda).

Also, you must not access Freeform via an anonymous proxy IP address. Please use our online feedback form to submit a ticket if you're incorrectly getting an "Out of the country" message.

Freeform Programming

When are new episodes added?

New episodes are usually added the day after they air on TV, so it's easy to catch up!

How can I find the TV schedule?

The schedule is under Live and allows viewers to see up to 24 hrs into the future.

I was watching an episode or movie in the app previously, but cannot find it anymore.

That particular episode or movie may no longer be available. Check back again soon— programming in the Freeform app is updated regularly!

The expiration for each show, episode, and movie varies, but expiration messaging will appear on each video content one week before it's due to expire.

I want to watch in the app, but cannot find a Freeform show, episode, or movie that aired on TV.

Sometimes we have to run different shows & movies than what you have seen on your TV. Don’t worry—programming in the Freeform app is updated regularly, so check back again soon!

Player Features

Can I resume playing a full episode video from where I left off?

Yes, if you’re on the same device, the player will automatically remember where you left off and allow you to resume the video you were watching.

Select the "History" section to see your viewing history and resume your video, if it has not expired.

Is closed captioning available?

Closed captioning is available for most, if not all, on demand full-episodes. Follow the steps below to turn CC on/off:

  1. Go to Main Menu on Apple TV

  2. Select Settings

  3. Select General

  4. Select Accessibility

  5. Select Closed Captions + SDH to turn it on and off

To access the Accessibility Menu from anywhere in Apple TV:

  1. Swipe down on the remote touch surface to open the Accessibility Menu

  2. Swipe right on the remote touch surface to highlight "Subtitles"

  3. Swipe down on the remote touch surface to make your selection

  4. Swipe up on the remote touch surface to close the Accessibility Menu

When activated check mark will appear.

For “Live” programming, most shows have closed captioning available.

Mobile Apps

Can I stream my iOS device to my Apple TV using AirPlay?

No, at this time AirPlay is not currently supported. But check back soon as we are always working on new features in our iOS apps!

Is the Remote application for iOS compatible with the Freeform application on Apple TV?

Yes. To activate, follow the steps below:

  1. Download "Remote" application in the App Store from your iOS device

  2. Launch application

  3. Turn on home sharing

  4. Enter Apple ID and password that you are currently using with your Apple TV

  5. Once home sharing is on, the Apple TV icon will appear on the mobile iOS device

  6. Select Apple TV icon

  7. In the top right corner of your device, select the icon with 4 arrows. Mobile device should now act as a remote for Apple TV
