1. Detective Wilden watching their every move!
As soon as Alison's case became a murder investigation, the girls were hounded by Detective Wilden who made them go over every detail, and every conversation, from the night that Alison disappeared. Wilden made it perfectly clear that he didn't believe any of the girls' stories.
2. Their guilt over "the Jenna thing."
One thing that none of the Liars were eager to 'fess up to was how Jenna Marshall lost her sight. Jenna's stepbrother Toby was blamed for starting the fire that injured her, when in fact it was Alison who was the real culprit. The other Liars were all wracked with guilt, and made every attempt to avoid Jenna whenever possible.
3. Keeping secrets!
As if life wasn't stressful enough, the girls each had their own stuff to deal with too! Aria had been keeping her dad's affair with Meredith under wraps, but she was horrified when Meredith turned up at Ella's art opening. Aria told Meredith to stay away from her mom and dad, but she took no notice!
4. Forbidden love.
And Aria had love drama of her own after unintentionally falling hard for her new English teacher who she met in a bar before the school year started. Ezria were soon thrown in to a rollercoaster ride of emotions as they struggled with how they felt, versus doing the "right thing" in the eyes of Rosewood High and Aria's parents.
5. Sibling rivalry!
Spencer and Melissa Hastings had a habit of falling for the same guys, and it always seemed to get Spencer into trouble. After witnessing fiancé Wren kissing her younger sister, Melissa called off the wedding and proceeded to make Spencer's life hell.
6. Impossible goals.
The Hastings family has always been intensely competitive, whether in academia, sports, or business. After feeling buried under a mountain of school work, Spencer stole her older sister's Russian History essay and passed it off as her own. Hoping to stay under the radar, Spencer instead won an essay-writing competition with the stolen work.
7. Coming out!
Although she was initially dating a guy named Ben, Emily soon became close with new neighbor Maya St. Germain. Emily began to realize that the feelings she had for Maya went beyond friendship and, after sharing a kiss in a photo booth, the two began dating. Emily's mom reacted particularly badly to her sexuality, but her friends were super supportive.
8. Heartache-filled hugs.
Emily's dad Wayne was often away for extended periods of time due to his position as a Lieutenant Colonel so the Fields family were never together for very long. Wayne was more understanding than Emily's mom was about her coming out process, but times were still pretty rough all in all.
9. Feeling replaced!
Hanna's mom and dad separated leaving Hanna feeling a little abandoned. Hanna started shoplifting and Ashley worried that it was because of her and Tom's divorce. Just as Hanna began to reconnect with her dad, he announced that he was engaged to a lady named Isabel, and that Hanna would soon have a stepsister named Kate.
10. Weight watching.
Hanna used to have a pretty unhealthy attitude towards food when she first became part of the popular group. Alison used to call her "hefty Hanna" and even encouraged her to throw up after eating too much. The super cruel A knew just how to hurt Hanna when they forced her to eat pig design cupcakes as part of a bargain.
