The ending of Pretty Little Liars was perfect because it brought everything back full circle. After having the game stolen from her, Mona - the original A - won the game back from A.D., Alex Drake. Take another look at how Mona played the End Game in Season 7B, and the way she came out on top of A.D. in the series finale, with our recap below.
Mona first learned about the End Game when Hanna went to her for help.
She was in awe of the complexity of it, but she knew it was dangerous for her to play as it could bring out her dark side.
But the idea of actually winning the game was too good to resist.
Mona had met her match in A.D., so the possibility of beating them was a challenge that she couldn't pass up.
She was also motivated by her desire to be accepted by the Liars.
Despite everything she had done for them, the Liars still hadn't completely accepted Mona. Even Hanna admitted that she only trusted her "sometimes." By winning the game for them and putting an end to A.D.'s terror, she thought that she might finally earn their trust.
When we first saw her in her new lair we were concerned.
We thought it meant that she was A.D., but now we know this was where she was gathering her research to beat the game and discover A.D.'s identity.
But A.D. did briefly get the better of her.
When they stole back the game and tormented her over Charlotte's death, Mona was broken. Although she doesn't always show it, Mona is fragile, and she felt deeply guilty about being responsible for Charlotte's death.
However, when Wren came to Welby she saw her chance to take the game back again.
She convinced him that she could break Mary Drake out of prison, and in doing so earned her way onto the A.D. Team. She then won A.D.'s trust by wearing the Melissa mask while spying on the Liars. Mona did all of this so she could get closer to A.D., and in turn get closer to finding out who they really were.
And it worked.
When Mona overheard the Liars work out Spencer had a twin, she called A.D. to inform them and demanded to know who they were and where they were. Alex then revealed all to Mona because she believed that she was now her ally. However, as soon as Mona had this information, she gave it to the Liars so she could help them rescue Spencer.
After figuring out who the real Spencer was, a police officer arrived at the bunker to arrest Alex.
Mona revealed that she had called the cops, but all was not as it seemed...
When we next saw Mona, she was in Paris with the cop!
Mona hadn't really called 911. The cop was a decoy working with Mona, who captured both Alex and Mary and helped her move them to Paris.
And with that she won back the game she started.
She even created a dollhouse for them, just like Charlotte did when she stole the game from her. Mona would probably call that "poetic justice."
She definitely isn't "Loser Mona" anymore.
