We meet the young Joel!
In a flashback we see a young Joel talking to his brother about camp. His brother Michael says he'll miss Joel when he goes back to Camp Stillwater. They discuss Michael's outfit for prom and make fun of each other. Michael gives Joel his favorite jersey but then seems to see something by the window. Joel can't see anything and Michael sends him out of the room.
The campers are going camping!
Joel enters the staff lounge and is immediately questioned about his night in the woods with Deb by the other counselors. They are still suspicious of her involvement in the occult. Joel defends her and Alex realizes he has hooked up with her. Talk turns to other hook ups, such as Blair and Drew, but they quickly change the subject. Cricket and Deb lead the campers through the woods for their night outside, warning them to stick together and watch out for bear traps. Alex scares a little girl and Joel and Jessie have to help her find her inhaler to calm down. While Amy and Joel are discussing his interest in Deb, Joel has a vision of Amy bleeding with the Tall Man behind her. When he looks through his camera there's no one there and Amy is fine. She asks him what's wrong but he brushes off his fears.
Young Joel discovers something disturbing.
In a flashback to Michael's prom day, his friends, parents and Joel wait for him downstairs while he gets ready upstairs. Concerned on what is taking Michael so long to get ready, Michael's parents ask Joel to get his brother. As Joel knocks on the bathroom door he is startled at what is seeping through the door cracks: water and blood. Freaked out, Joel opens the bathroom door to reveal Michael laying in an overflowing bathtub with his wrists slit. The words “HE WILL NEVER LEAVE ME ALONE" are sprawled across the bathroom wall, written in Michael's blood.
Jessie is mad at Amy!
Deb splits the counselors into pairs and asks them to get supplies and help set up camp. Joel is still worried about Amy so he tells her to be careful in the woods. Amy and Jessie fill up their water supplies from the stream, where Jessie confronts Amy about kissing Garrett. Amy can't remember what happened during the previous night but when she tries to explain that, Jessie is not interested. Amy tells Jessie that she should just admit it if she likes Sykes and implies that some people don't like the new persona Jessie has created for herself. Joel is with Deb, helping her pitch some of the tents. He suggests they go inside the tent together for some alone time but Deb seems confused and appears not to remember their night together in the woods.
Joel saw the Tall Man before he came to camp!
In a flashback, we see Joel trying on a tux for his own prom. His friends start filming him as his girlfriend walks in. She talks about how handsome he is and congratulates him on his early acceptance to NYU for film studies. As they're flirting, Joel suddenly sees the Tall Man behind him, but when he looks through the camera there's no one there. When questioned by his girlfriend, he denies seeing anything. Back in present day, Cricket and Alex are searching for firewood together. He is walking backwards without looking when Cricket spots a bear trap behind him and quickly pushes him out of harm's way. She warns that the people she saw in her dream are still out there somewhere and they should all be more careful. Alex suggests that they both come back to that clearing after everyone else is asleep and enjoy the blood moon together but Cricket is not interested.
The Tall Man has a message for Joel.
Joel and Amy are sitting around the camp fire showing the campers how to roast marshmallows. Amy asks Joel why he was so worried about her earlier but his response is very vague. Suddenly, he sees the Tall Man standing in the woods, but when he looks through his camera lens there is no one there. The Tall Man reappears right beside him with a message. He tells Joel to kill Amy tonight or else someone else will die.
Drew doesn't want to speak to Blair.
Alex approaches Blair asking him for information on Cricket. He wants to know what her favorite song is so Blair tells him it's Killing Moon. Alex approaches Drew and asks him if he has that song and whether he could borrow a copy of it. When Alex leaves, Blair tries to talk to Drew about the previous night. Drew says he had his chance but Blair wants another. Then Blair notices that the meat they brought has spoiled and Deb asks Amy to go back to camp and get some hot dogs for them to eat instead. Joel doesn't want Amy to go after the Tall Man's threat but he doesn't know how to explain that to the others. Drew suggests that he and Jessie can go instead. While they're speaking, the Tall Man appears beside Joel again, telling him to follow Amy and kill her. Joel takes out his camera and is shocked to see that the Tall Man still appears through the lens.
Deb and Joel remember their night together very differently.
In a flashback, Joel is talking to himself while getting ready for prom. He hears a noise and spots the Tall Man outside in his garden. He runs outside and tries to film him but the Tall Man does not appear through the lens. Joel's father comes out to find out what he's doing. They talk about Michael and how he was seeing things on prom night right before he died. His father doesn't know that Joel has been seeing things and Joel doesn't tell him the truth. Back at camp, Joel wants to tell Deb that he's been seeing things. While they're talking, he realizes that she does not remember hooking up with him the night before. Joel gets increasingly distressed Joel realizes that he doesn't know what is real or imagined anymore. He checks his camera and sees that what is recorded is different than what he remembers happening. The Tall Man appears on the screen telling him that he will not leave Joel alone until he kills Amy.
Cricket considers giving Alex another chance.
Blair tells Cricket that Alex has been asking about her favorite song and suggests she give him another chance. Meanwhile, the Tall Man is still warning Joel that if he doesn't kill Amy someone else will be chosen. A small girl leans over the fire and Joel pulls her away. Everyone stares at him but all he can hear is the Tall Man. Amy sits beside him and asks where his camera is but he insists it's not working. In another flashback, young Joel arrives at prom and immediately sees the Tall Man on the dancefloor. When he takes out his camera to prove the vision isn't real his girlfriend asks him to put it away. They join their friends and start dancing.
One of the campers is in trouble!
Drew and Jessie are walking through the woods with the hot dogs. They stop outside Holyokes cabin and bump into Deputy Sykes. Drew leaves them to it so Jessie and Sykes go into the cabin to investigate. Back at camp, Joel is on edge. When Alex gets the boom box off Blair and starts to walk off to meet Cricket, Joel is concerned about him being alone in the woods. Drew arrives back without Jessie and Joel keeps asking if she's ok. Then Amy and Cricket run over to the other counselors saying that Deb needs them. They find one of the campers is short of breath and has lost her inhaler. Joel goes off to find it as he thinks the Tall Man has chosen this little girl to die if he doesn't kill Amy.
Deputy Sykes finds another clue!
Deputy Sykes and Jessie find a small trapdoor with a box underneath. One of the items in the box is a cufflink with the initials J.S. Sykes believes they stand for Jack Sykes which means his father was investigating the camp before he died. They also find a recording which sounds like the Tall Man encouraging his followers to kill themselves. Joel is running through the woods trying to find the inhaler but he keeps getting interrupted by the Tall Man. In a flashback, we see Joel at prom. He is still seeing the Tall Man in the middle of the dance floor. Joel snaps and starts to beat up the Tall Man but when he hears his girlfriend screaming, he realizes he was tricked and actually has been beating up his friend in front of everyone.
Amy saves Joel from himself.
In the present day, Joel finds the little girl's inhaler but is interrupted by Amy. He threatens her with the knife Cricket gave him as the Tall Man watches and urges him to kill her. Amy is confused but Joel starts the hold the knife over his own wrist, saying "He'll never leave me alone". Amy stops him from cutting himself and assures him there's no one else there. Joel breaks down as Amy comforts him. In another flashback, Joel is still at prom with his girlfriend. She knows that something is wrong and that he didn't just beat up Kenny because he was drunk. Joel refuses to tell her he's seeing things and then he breaks up with her.
Joel finally tells everyone the truth.
Deb tells the counselors that the little girl will be ok now that she has her inhaler back. Cricket tells Blair she will go meet Alex in the woods and he tells her he's proud of her. When she leaves, Amy gathers the remaining counselors together to hear Joel's story. He tells them about his brother and how he's now seeing that same man and he keeps telling him to kill Amy. Although she's shaken, she insists the man isn't real. Then Jessie arrives back with the picture of Holyoke and Joel recognizes him from his visions. While they discuss Holyoke, the young Russian camper, Anton, that previously spoke with the Tall Man interrupts them and tells Joel that he should have killed Amy while he had the chance.
The Tall man was right!
Meanwhile, Alex is waiting in the woods for Cricket. He is holding a flower and playing Cricket's favorite song on a boom box. Cricket walks through the trees towards him when she notices a bear trap on the ground beside her. As she moves to walk around it, a masked figure appears and throws her backwards onto the ground. Her head lands on the bear trap and it snaps over her. Alex hears a noise and turns to see if there's anyone nearby. Cricket lies unmoving in the bear trap with blood around her face, her eyes wide open and glassy.
