PLL veterans, Alison and Mona, probably thought they'd left the drama of Rosewood behind them when they joined the faculty at BHU. But season 1 of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists proves you can't outrun the past. Check out our list of PLL easter eggs to see how many you spotted, and don't forget you can stream all of season 1 right here on Freeform.
1. First of all, everything begins with a funeral.
Just like in Rosewood, all the drama at Beacon Heights University starts with the death of the group's unofficial leader. And as it did for the original Liars, it's this death that really brings Ava, Dylan, and Caitlin together.
2. The reason for Mona's return from France.
In the PLL finale, Mona took revenge on Alex and Mary Drake by holding them captive in a mock dollhouse in a creepy Parisian doll store (she's big on dolls). When Alison asks Mona why she's back in the US, Mona implies that her hostages have escaped. Now, we don't know about you, but finding out that A.D. is on the loose makes us pretty nervous.
3. And to make matters worse, Booker knows all about it.
This Linda Tanner wannabe really needs to back off. Why is it that everything she says sounds so threatening?
4. Then there's this backhanded compliment.
No matter how much Alison tries to move away from her mean girl reputation, there's no escaping her past at BHU. As Claire Hotchkiss swiftly reminds her during the welcome back party.
5. This homage to loser Mona.
Remind you of anyone? Don't feel bad if you missed this, you had to be paying pretty close attention to notice loser Mona's lookalike at the end of episode 1.
6. And high school Mona.
When mystery man, Ray Hogadorn, asks Mona what she got up to as a teenager, not only does she allude to her time as A, but also Manna's heyday committing petty crimes at the mall.
7. And crazy Mona.
Mona talking to mirrors had us all a little concerned. Until the Beacon Guard reveal, we thought she was due to be carted back to Radley.
8. Ali’s bitch slap.
After Nolan's death sends Mona into an obsessive spiral, Ali has to literally knock some sense into her. It's just like the good old days of PLL, and that epic Ali vs. Mona slapping match at the church in season 5.
9. Mona speaking about her history with Ali.
From enemy, to frenemy, to ... friends?
10. And Ali reminding us how complicated that history is.
After all, it was Mona who forced Alison to fake her death in the first place. On the bright side, their shared experience of playing dead gives them an edge when it comes to tracking down Taylor.
11. Then there's Mona admitting she was A.
These new liars have no idea who they're dealing with.
12. And falling back into old habits.
She may be borrowing lines from A here, but luckily for the Perfectionists, she's on their side this time.
13. These sinister cupcakes.
If Mona looks a little disturbed by these sweet treats, it's because she definitely is. Back in season 1 of PLL, Mona (as A) forced "Hefty Hanna" to face her biggest insecurity and eat an entire box of pig-shaped cupcakes in public. Karma's such a bitch.
14. Ava setting us all on edge.
Caitlin receiving a mysterious text from "A" made us all expect the worst. Luckily, it turns out that's just how Ava signs off sometimes. Phew.
15. BHU as Rosewood 2.0.
With all the drama going down, it's no wonder Mona makes the connection with her chaotic hometown.
16. And Caitlin's subconscious Spencer impersonation.
Mona's quick to point out the similarity when Caitlin goes full Spencer, but we're pretty sure only Ali (and PLL fans) got the reference.
17. News that Veronica Hastings is still in politics.
Caitlin ends up applying for an internship with Spencer's mom, Senator Hastings. Guess it really is a small world after all.
18. The highly anticipated Haleb update.
Mona's phone call with Hanna not only shows us that the two are still great friends, but also confirms the birth of a little Haleb baby! We couldn't be happier for them.
19. And Spoby's elopement.
In the same conversation, Spoby fans finally get the happily ever after they deserve. Not even Hanna knew, apparently!
20. Emison's divorce.
Unfortunately, not all news from Rosewood has been good. And things aren't looking great for these mamas — Emily's stopped wearing her wedding ring and the divorce papers have been signed.
21. Alison's video call with the twins.
Emison may be on the rocks, but at least the twins still love their mommy.
22. And Taylor's best Alison impression.
In episode 8, Taylor unknowingly quotes the line Alison used when she came back from the dead in season 4 of PLL. Looks like these two really do think alike.
