The truth is finally out. Sebastian's real identity has been revealed and now the showdown we've been waiting for is fast approaching. In season 2 episode 18, 'Awake, Arise, Or Be Forever Fallen', Max's life was in mortal danger, Maia and Luke dealt with a Werewolf crisis, and Clary came up with a plan to force her brother out of hiding. Read on for more details that you might have missed from this incredible episode.
1. Sebastian attacked Max Lightwood to keep his identity a secret.
Max tracked Sebastian using a strand of hair from the box containing Jonathan Morgenstern’s baby items. When Sebastian realized that Max had discovered his true identity, he attacked the young boy to keep him silent. Hearing Clary out in the corridor, he quickly hid Max's unconscious body under the desk and went to join her for a meeting with Alec and the others. Izzy was worried about not being able to locate Max, but Alec told them all to focus on keeping the Mortal Mirror safe from Valentine.
2. Maia and Simon witnessed a Werewolf attack.
After their paddle boat date, Maia was just about to kiss Simon when she heard someone in danger. They both ran towards the source of the noise and found a young man being attacked by a Werewolf. He was badly scratched and told them his name was Bartholomew (Bat, for short). The Werewolf ran off, but Maia knew who was to blame for the violence.
3. Luke and Magnus paid another visit to the Seelie Queen.
After finding out that Alec had been lying to him about the Soul Sword, Magnus decided that he could no longer trust that the Clave would ever treat the Downworlders as their equals or keep the promises they made. He decided to align with the Seelie Queen to protect his people. She insisted that they would have to break Clave rules and do things her way. Magnus was hesitant to go completely rogue, so the Queen gave him a rose. She said he had until all the petals turned black to make up his mind.
4. Izzy found Max unconscious in her room.
While Sebastian realized that the youngest Lightwood was no longer under Alec's desk where he hid him, Izzy found her brother in her room and screamed for help. Shadowhunter medics were looking after Max when the others arrived. Alec tried to call Magnus for help but Magnus rejected the call.
5. Magnus looked back on the beginning of his relationship with Alec.
He was holding the Seelie Queen's rose and still considering her offer when he had a flashback to the first night Alec came over for cocktails. It was after Luke got attacked by the previous Alpha of the New York Werewolves. Alec fell asleep on the Warlock's couch and then insisted that Magnus not tell anyone he technically stayed the night. Magnus pointed out that he had his own reputation to maintain. They both realized that although they come from very different backgrounds, they could trust each other.
6. Maia took care of Bat and waited to see if he would turn.
Luke was surprised to find Ollie and her partner, Sam, having dinner at the Jade Wolf. He got called away by Maia who needed his advice on dealing with the Bat situation. Luke said he would deal with the attacker, who they both agreed was Russell trying to get new pack members. At the boathouse, Maia and Simon looked after Bat and tried to restrain him so he wouldn't hurt himself but when he turned they quickly ran out and locked Bat inside.
7. Clary and Jace investigated Max's attack and made a discovery.
They found Jocelyn's J.C. box under Izzy's bed and realized Max must have tracked Clary's brother somehow. They knew that Clary's brother, who she still didn't know was Sebastian, must be looking for the Mortal Mirror which would mean he could still be at the Institute in disguise as another Shadowhunter. Alec declared a lockdown at the Institute. Izzy stayed by Max's bedside and was almost convinced to go take a break by Sebastian when her parents arrived, foiling Sebastian's plan to be alone with Max.
8. Magnus remembered the first night he and Alec spent together.
That night, while they were kissing passionately, Magnus lost control and tried to hide his Warlock's mark from Alec. But Alec told him his cat eyes were beautiful. Meanwhile, back in the present day, Alec arrived at Magnus' apartment to ask for help reviving Max.
9. Luke confronted Russell and they had a fight to be the pack leader.
Luke told Russell he had to follow the Clave rules, and that turning innocent Mundanes into Werewolves was not acceptable. Russell said the Wolves needed a real leader and challenged his old Alpha to a battle to the death. They fought until Luke had the upper hand but he still refused to kill Russell, defying Werewolf tradition. The other members of the pack bowed down to Luke as their new leader. Meanwhile, Sebastian killed a Shadowhunter guard to find out where the Mortal Mirror was being held. Back at the Jade Wolf, Maia told Simon about her ex-boyfriend who turned her into a Werewolf and broke her heart.
10. The Lightwood family was forced to make a difficult decision.
Clary asked to borrow Izzy's whip for a new plan to catch her brother. Jace told Sebastian he was going to guard the Mortal Mirror himself as he might be the only match for Jonathan. Magnus told the Lightwoods there was nothing he could do for Max. Their only hope was a risky procedure suggested by Brother Enoch that very few Shadowhunters had ever survived before. Magnus tried to comfort Alec and remembered the morning after their first night together when Alec asked him what he was afraid of. Magnus had said that having nothing to lose made you fearless.
11. Sebastian finally got his hands on the Mortal Mirror.
Jace received a text from Alec's phone saying that Max was dead, so he left his post. Sebastian quickly went down to the crypt and killed all the guards so that he could steal the Mortal Mirror for Valentine. When he returned upstairs, Clary explained her plan to test everyone with electrum from izzy's whip which would burn someone with Demon blood. Sebastian held it but hid his hand (and his pain) so Clary wouldn't see. Meanwhile, Jace arrived at Max's bedside and realized he had been tricked. He sounded the alarm.
12. Clary saw through Sebastian's disguise.
When he returned the electrum, she realized it was warm and forced him to show her his hand. There was an ugly burn proving he had Demon blood. Just as Sebastian was about to leave, she got his attention then quickly stabbed him with her Seraph blade. He grabbed her in a chokehold as the doors the the Institute locked automatically leaving them trapped together. Sebastian said he wanted her and the Mirror but she broke free. She stabbed him in the neck, grabbed the Mortal Mirror and used a rune to escape through the glass doors back into the Institute. Sebastian escaped and Clary used a rune to deactivate the Mirror as she had done with the Soul Sword. However, her rune turned the Mirror into dust.
13. Maia finally let her guard down with Simon.
She admitted she found it hard to trust people after her boyfriend, Jordan, betrayed her and attacked her. But when Simon insisted on staying to help Bat through the transition, she realized what a great guy she had in front of her and they kissed. Inside the boathouse they found Bat was back in human form and very scared. Maia insisted that he was not alone.
14. Magnus told Alec that he had to prioritize his people over their relationship.
Max woke up and everyone was relieved to see that the Silent Brothers' procedure had saved his life. Magnus left the family scene and Alec followed him. He thanked him for helping Max and apologized for lying about the Soul Sword. Alec said "I love you," but Magnus explained that he needed to look after his people and the only thing getting in the way of that was his relationship with Alec. As he walked away, he told Alec this was what he had been afraid of.
15. Luke welcomed his new pack members.
Maia handed around drinks to all the old members of Russell's pack and Luke gave a speech welcoming them to the New York Pack. Everyone drank and cheered, including Russell himself and the newly initiated Bat. They didn't realize there was a tiny camera watching everything. Luke's partner, Ollie, and her girlfriend, Sam, watched the footage of Luke talking about Werewolves.
16. Clary had a vision of where they could find the real Mortal Mirror.
Izzy blamed herself for trusting Sebastian and bringing him into the Institute in the first place. Alec and Jace reminded her that they had all been fooled. Clary tried to figure out why her rune destroyed the Mirror. Then, as she was looking at a painting of Lake Lyn, she remembered all the dreams she had been having about being in the Lake with swords coming at her. She realized that the Angel had been sending her a vision of the true Mortal Mirror: Lake Lyn itself.
