7 Things To Consider Before Dating A Co-Worker

Let's get down to business.

In season 1 of The Bold Type, we saw Sutton try to navigate the tricky world of dating at work. Originally she dated Scarlet board member, Richard, and in the amazing season finale we saw her try to make things work with Alex. Dating at work can be really difficult, but we're here to help. Here are seven questions you should ask yourself if you're feeling the sparks with a co-worker.

1. How closely do you work together?

Life is all about balance. If, like Sutton and Richard, you work in different departments, you pass each other a couple of times a day and the majority of your time spent together is outside of work, things will be a little less complicated than if you are in the same department.

2. Is one of you 'a higher up'?

Workplace relationships can get really confusing, and potentially break company policy, if one of you is technically subordinate to the other. If at all possible, avoid these kinds of dynamics.

3. Could you get into trouble?

Speaking of company policy, it's good to know the specific rules that your workplace has on dating. Most workplaces will have an issue with some types of relationships, so it's a good idea to find out where you stand. If it's just a case of disclosing your relationship when things get more serious, that's fine, but if one or both of you are risking your jobs, think about whether the sneaking around is worth it.

4. How awkward would it be if you broke up?

Considering what could happen if you guys break up is a mature and sensible thing to do. Are you generally bad with breakups? Does the idea of seeing your new ex every day make you cringe? Can you imagine your breakup affecting your co-workers? If the answer to any of these is 'yes,' it might be worth reconsidering.

5. Can you leave arguments at home?

When things are tough, your co-workers will usually be able to tell. Especially when you and your partner are glaring at each other over the water cooler and taking extra coffee breaks to avoid one another. Leaving arguments at home and being professional towards each other is a must if you want to avoid making your office the most awkward place ever.

6. Will they distract you from your work?

Relationships can be distracting -- you can't help daydreaming about your date last night, or wondering what they meant in their text, or thinking about when you'll see them next. This can get so much worse when that person is actually in front of you all the time, ready to hear your sappy thoughts. Think about whether you're the sort of person who can save the puppy eyes till after work.

7. Do you normally chat to your work BFFs about relationships?

If you normally share every detail of your dates with your work crew, be prepared to switch things up a little with a workplace romance. While you co-workers might be even more interested, telling them all the juicy stuff might be a little unfair to your date. It doesn't create the most professional environment if the entire office knows that weird thing they want to try, so remember to keep the details on the down-low.
