If you've just watched The Bold Type premiere, you'll know that Jacqueline is the boss of our dreams. She supports her employees, she's respected, and she's mega successful. After a while we stopped just cheering at the screen and decided to write a list of all the times Jacqueline proved that boss doesn’t equal bitch.
1. She faces challenges with confidence and style.
Public speaking can be scary. It can be even scarier when you’re facing off against an all-male boardroom who are literally shaking their heads and tutting at you. Jacqueline solves this by being friendly, professional and funny. Queen.
2. She is sensitive and powerful.
Professionalism and emotion aren’t generally associated with one another. But there is a real value to being sensitive and Jacqueline understands this. She asks questions of her staff designed to make them open up and trust their gut.
3. She invests in her employees.
It’s hard to believe in yourself sometimes, especially in a new and daunting job. Jacqueline makes this one hundred times easier for Jane by telling her she already has her support. Jacqueline knows a rising tide lifts all boats, and by supporting her staff she'll have a more successful magazine.
4. She is authoritative but still approachable.
Do we believe Jacqueline has never felt powerless? No. But Jane doesn't need to know that right now. As a mega-boss, Jacqueline knows how to be a powerful guiding force without seeming distant.
5. She values female friendships -- and supports them.
Personally if we came across this scene we’d feel major FOMO, but Jacqueline sees this as a source of pride. She’s created a place where female friendships can grow and thrive.
6. She’s sexual and proud.
We’re so impressed.
We’re so jealous.
We’re so curious.
7. She demands results.
Jacqueline doesn't like some of Jane’s early work. But instead of criticizing, she encourages Jane to come out of her shell -- all while making it clear that she expects the best. Now THAT is leadership.
8. She gives praise where it is deserved.
Jane writes an amazing article and Jacqueline gives it valuable and succinct praise. It's simple actions like this which embody what The Bold Type celebrates; women lifting up other women and celebrating each other's successes.
9. And she gives the most amazing - and motivating - speeches.
Life is a journey. You need to try new things, push your boundaries and make mistakes before you can truly learn what you're doing. That is a damn important lesson.
