We are thrilled to have The Bold Type back on our screens, and these first two episodes did not hold back in tackling some of the most prevailing issues we face in today's modern world. Read on to discover how our best, bold girls are measuring up to the challenges which have faced them so far. And if you haven't watched the premiere yet, how about doing so now?
Coming to terms with your sexuality and everything that entails.
Kat jumped head first into her relationship with Adena, and we admire her so much for that. But in the premiere we saw how there are various aspects of being in a relationship with a woman that Kat wasn't fully prepared for. Luckily, her partner is extremely supportive and tried her best to make Kat feel comfortable trying new things.
Choosing between your relationship and your career.
We have loved watching Sutton and Richard's relationship blossom, but what we've loved even more is watching Sutton climb the fashion ladder at Scarlet. She has taken big risks in both her love and work lives, but in the season premiere she had to make a really difficult decision about which one to prioritize. It must have been so hard for her, but we were ready to support her no matter what.
Searching for the truth, even when it isn't pretty.
Jane is already stepping out of her comfort zone at Incite, and it's inspiring to watch her embrace her own voice away from Scarlet. Although it didn't end well, we were really impressed by the way she refused to tear women down just for making one mistake. If all journalists were like her the world would be a less judgmental place.
Deciding whether to let the world label you or live your own truth.
Kat's struggle to find her own identity under the weight of the expectations of her friends and family was incredibly emotional to watch. Her story brought to light the confusing line walked by people of mixed racial parentage, who are forced to make a choice that others don't even have to think about.
Being introduced to family and friends by your partner.
Kadena's relationship took another big step when Kat introduced Adena to her parents for the first time — which is never an easy thing to do. There's always a lot of pressure in this scenario (what if they don't like you?!) but Adena must have been feeling even more under scrutiny than usual, considering Kat's parents are therapists.
Dealing with slut-shaming and loss of confidence.
It was so hard watching Sutton deal with vicious rumors. Her spiral of self-doubt is something we've all been through, and it was heartbreaking to see her question whether her abilities were truly the result of her own talent or her so-called "flirty" personality. It's still so hard to be a successful and talented woman in the workplace, and we were so impressed at how Sutton called out the toxic behavior of the other fashion assistants (with a little pep talk from Jacqueline, of course).
Fitting in at a new job while maintaining your own voice.
It's never easy starting a new job, and even more difficult when your voice and vision clash with that of your employer's. We could totally relate to how Jane found it difficult to balance her own views with the responsibility of representing Incite as a whole, but we were also so glad to see her refusing to compromise her own ethics for a hit piece. Even though things didn't exactly work out in the most ideal fashion for her, she learned a lot about herself — where she belongs, the importance of staying close to her friends and being in a nurturing work environment.
Deciding whether to advance up the corporate ladder or stay in a job you love.
Jacqueline faced the tough decision of leaving her position as editor of Scarlet and joining the board of directors. Even though she would have earned more power, she knew her heart is still very much with her current job. While we're thrilled Jacqueline is staying put for now, she now has to negotiate a potential clash of ideologies with new board member Cleo, who seems set on shaking up the digital side of the magazine. Of course, Jacqueline continues to rise to such challenges — and continue to give the best pep talks ever.
