The Boss Girl Behind The Bold Type Mural Is As Cool As You Thought She Would Be

Meet the talented Samantha Rothenberg of Violet Clair

Samantha Rothenberg is the genius behind Violet Clair and the show-stopping billboards for The Bold Type. You know, the one that we all just couldn't help but stop and take a photo in front of:

We were thrilled to have a chance to interview her and chat about her art and what she love about The Bold Type.

What’s one of your favorite projects that you’ve ever worked on, and why?

The murals I created for The Bold Type of course! I think the coolest part was getting tagged by people reacting to them on social media.

Describe the aesthetic of your work in one word.

Pastel-ey (k, so I just made that word up, but you know what I mean!)

What advice would you give to younger women who would like to do what you do?

Believe in what you do with an enthusiasm that borders on delusional, and stay in the game even when it feels like nothing is happening.

Do you think art can be revolutionary?

Absolutely! Art can be used as a powerful tool to make statements and contribute to conversations.

Which character do you admire most on The Bold Type?

Probably Kat! I love how she’s super plugged-in and always questioning things.

If you could pitch an article for Scarlet Magazine what would it be?

I think it would be fun to pitch something about how my art career started on the back of a failed relationship.

What’s been your favorite moment on The Bold Type so far?

Richard bringing Sutton breadsticks was pretty epic.

Which moment from The Bold Type do you relate to the most?

There are too many! When I was about 22, I worked at a fancy office in Midtown doing a fashion-related job, and this show constantly brings me back to that time.
