In season 3 episode 6 of The Bold Type, we had a shocking revelation. Alex admitted that he had feelings for Sutton. Admittedly, she took this very well and was surprisingly calm -- but we freaked out. And this got us thinking, who is actually better for Sutton: Richard or Alex. We've done the research and compiled a complete rundown of all the great things these guys have done so far, so you can make up your own mind. You're welcome.
Episode 1 'Pilot'
Alex spends this whole episode being an amazing friend to Jane. He invites her to the writers' table, he helps her to think of an article idea and he goes with her to a party just so she can run into her ex. He gets a lot of nice guy points right there.
At this point we still weren't sure if he was genuine, but we still got some amazing Richard moments. He and Sutton have that super sexy kiss in the elevator, they have some adorable pillow talk, Sutton teaches Richard how to use Snapchat, and who can forget "Describe your panties"? Oh, Richard.
Episode 2 'O Hell No'
Proof of Alex being the most sensitive, respectful guy ever continues to roll in. He asks to abstain from commenting on porn at work, he comes up with genius article ideas ("Spooning or Forking: Which One Makes You Hungrier?"), and he fully supports Sutton in her choice to go for an ad sales job, calling her "amazing." Then, when she decides not to take it, he praises her for following her dreams.
Richard gives Sutton an informational interview for the ad sales job and hits us all with a little Mr. Grey reference (which he stops when Sutton says she feels awkward -- respectful). He is also extremely supportive of her aspirations, admires her work ethic and appreciates her sense of humor. Finally, he violates all kinds of legal clauses to phone her and tell her she has the job -- so you know it's true.
Episode 3 'The Woman Behind The Clothes'
Alex proves that he listens to Sutton's dreams and gives her a heads-up about a job opening up in the fashion department. They also share a moment when Sutton designs an outfit for him in the fashion closet and he praises her styling abilities -- complimenting her on a quality she truly cares about.
Richard moves into dream boyfriend territory. He books them a dinner and then when Sutton cancels last minute, instead of being annoyed, he turns up at work to deliver her breadsticks and to kiss in a fancy car. He is also 100% supportive of her fashion dreams. Breadsticks + emotional support = good guy.
Episode 4 'If You Can't Do It With Feeling'
Alex is quiet in this episode, mainly because he spends most of his time supporting Jane and cheering her up about her minimal participation in the political panel. But this is still important! It shows that he's not just being kind to Sutton because he has a crush on her, he's genuinely a great friend.
Richard continues to help Sutton shine. He tries really hard to put in a good word with Oliver. When this backfires, and he realizes that he has inadvertently revealed that Sutton didn't go to fashion school, he owns up straight away and apologizes for the misunderstanding.
Episode 5 'No Feminism In The Champagne Room'
Aaaaah this scene, this perfect scene. Alex proves that he is an amazing friend; because he is able to give Sutton usable advice but also because he is able to distract her from her problems with Oliver by making her laugh. Later, we see Sutton power posing so we know she respects his input. And let's not forget Alex's slow-mo snake-power-pose-moment. Perfection.
It's only a little reaction, but it is adorable. Richard walks up to the conference room and sees Sutton and Alex joking around. Instead of being jealous that another guy is making her laugh, he smiles. He smiles just because he knows that Sutton is happy. Can we get an "awwwwww"?
Episode 6 'The Breast Issue'
Richard and Sutton go for a walk outside and he really gives away that he is smitten. They hold hands, he appreciates her company, they reminisce about when they first met. He also tries his hardest to actually help both Jane and Sutton in this episode, giving legal advice when he thinks it is needed. Sutton also catches him walking into the locksmith where the security camera footage is, so we can only assume he's trying to help her out. It's also worth noting that he gets two apartment keys cut while he's there. Next step, guys!?
Oh, Alex. Alex, Alex, Alex. He is the perfect partner-in-crime Sutton needs in this episode. He visits her when she's working late, he follows her to investigate the security camera footage and he even invents a stalker for his tough-guy act to intimidate the locksmith. He also looks really happy when she finds the necklace and then devastated when he realizes her and Richard are seeing each other. Other things to take note of: he is so supportive of Jane this episode, the look him and Sutton share in the taxi, and how brave he was to admit his feelings.
So, what do you think? Who should Sutton be with?
