We've all been waiting for The Fosters to return, and the first episode of season 5 did not disappoint. We were on the edge of our seats the whole way through. If you haven't seen it yet, now is the perfect time to watch the full episode. Then check out our recap of all the key moments below.
Season 5 picked up right where season 4 left off.
Stef was desperately searching for Callie, who was still trapped in the motel with Russell. Meanwhile, some of the students and parents of Anchor Beach were protesting the board's decision to go private. They formed a circle round the school and refused to let anyone out.
Russell was trying to win over Callie.
He promised that he could get Callie a record deal and made one of the other girls do her makeup. It was clear he was just trying to manipulate her.
At the Adams Fosters' home, Gabe met up with Ana to talk about their relationships with Jesus and Mariana .
They were both frustrated by how hard it was to connect with the twins. Jesus had been mad at Gabe for telling Lena that he hadn't been taking his meds, and Ana felt like Mariana had humiliated her at their therapy session.
Diamond managed to take another girl's phone while Callie distracted her.
She cleverly took a photo of the motel's address and sent it to Stef. She also quickly deleted the photo before Russell checked the phone.
Stef tracked Callie's phone to the trunk of a car.
She was terrified that Callie herself was trapped in the trunk. We saw in the final episode of season 4 that Callie had hidden her phone in a bag which Russell gave to one of his associates, who was driving the car.
After a car chase, Stef caught up with the driver and arrested him.
He admitted that he had been delivering drugs, but he had no idea where Callie was. Stef thought she had lost her last chance at finding her daughter, until she noticed the photo that Diamond had sent her.
After running off in anger, Jesus made it back home and started destroying all of Brandon's stuff.
He was still furious because he thought Emma had been cheating on him with Brandon. Luckily, Gabe and Ana saw what was happening and Gabe stopped Jesus.
Callie told Russell her mom was a cop, and he threatened to kill her and Diamond.
But Diamond picked up Russell's gun and pointed it at him.
Callie tried to convince her not to shoot Russell because he wasn't worth it. As Diamond was hesitating, another pimp showed up looking for Russell. The girls locked themselves in the bathroom.
Meanwhile, Craig Stratos was trying to force an end to the protest.
Jude tried to stop Craig pushing Mariana, and a security guard pepper sprayed him.
Stef rushed to the motel just in time to save the girls.
Diamond was still holding Russell's gun, but Stef persuaded her to drop it. More police officers quickly stormed the motel and arrested Russell, who was injured in the shoot out.
After the protest ended, Monte realized that Drew wasn't technically the principal, so the vote had been invalid.
Drew was only acting principal until Monte stepped down. After seeing how he and Craig had acted at the protest, she and Lena were determined to continue the fight and not let Anchor Beach go private.
Brandon and Emma caught up with Jesus, and explained that nothing had ever happened between them.
Jesus accepted that he had overreacted and saw that his TBI had caused him to be paranoid. He made up with Emma, but Brandon was not happy that his room had been trashed.
Gabe realized that he had to stay and look after Jesus, and Ana opened up to Mariana.
Ana acknowledged that her poor parenting had been traumatizing for the twins, and wanted to make it up to them. Mariana said that being a good mother to Isabella was enough.
Stef took Callie home, and tried to explain that she wouldn't always be there to save her.
Her words sounded harsh, but we know Stef was just scared and worried about her daughter.
The episode ended with everyone finally back at home, but tensions lingered.
We don't know what the consequences of Callie's actions will be. Will she have to testify against Russell? There is clearly tension between Brandon and Jesus, and the future of Anchor Beach is still very uncertain.
