Considering the current political climate, we love that The Fosters embraces transgender characters. In the most recent episode 'Too Fast, Too Furious', we see Callie and Aaron face a tough hurdle in their relationship, and Cole come back into Callie's life. Let’s go back over what happened.
In season 5 episode 4, we were all so happy to see Cole come back into Callie’s life after Stef bumped into him at the LGBTQ center. He's doing really well, which is great news. He's seeing a girl called Marissa and he seems really happy. But then Callie tells him that she is dating Aaron and Cole is really surprised to hear this. The reason? Aaron is transgender.
The thing is, Cole thought that Callie didn’t want to date him because he is transgender. Even though Callie explained at the time that it was because they were friends, Cole didn’t really believe her. Nice to see that wound healed.
After they are done talking about their past, Callie nervously tells Cole that she thinks she might have sex with Aaron soon. Callie admits that she doesn’t really know what to do -- that she's not sure what’s okay and what’s not; what Aaron will like and what he won't.
So Cole does what any good friend would do, he offers advice. He tells Callie to take it slow and some of the things that he likes – one such thing being when his girlfriend tells him how masculine he is. So next time Callie sees Aaron, she tries out some of this advice...and it doesn't go over quite as she expected.
Because it's what Cole likes, not Aaron. After some awkwardness, Callie admits she asked Cole for advice. Aaron's obviously hurt that Callie didn’t just ask him her questions, and this spirals into an argument about trust. Aaron is also worried that after AJ, he's just a rebound. Extremely annoyed, Callie tells Aaron that she is sick of boys telling her how she feels and she storms out.
Later, after a chance to cool down (and a chat with AJ), Callie and Aaron completely open up to one another. Callie tells Aaron that while she may be over AJ, she’s not over the hurt he caused her -- which is why she’s also not ready to have sex. Confused about why Callie was going to sleep with him if she didn’t feel she was ready, Callie says she was worried Aaron would think she had a problem with the fact he is transgender.
Aaron can’t believe that that was how she felt and he assures her that he would never think that. Callie tells him that when they are eventually ready to have sex, she will need to be able to ask him questions without worrying that she will say the wrong thing -- because she probably will say the wrong thing. Aaron says that as long as she asks him, not someone else, she can ask him anything.
And so The Fosters breaks down more barriers which shouldn’t exist in the first place. The situation between Callie, Aaron, and Cole reminds us that everyone is an individual and that all relationships require communication. Is it any wonder we love this show?
